March First Priority Tasks

  • Cardboard and mulch areas that have been weeded
  • Order 60m3 of Mulch for fruit tree area and have delivered to that area before it starts raining
  • Spray organic weed spray (Kiwicare “Weedweapon”) on a hot day on small ground cover weeds in pebble gardens
  • Get new garden area built and ready
  • Plant Brassicas – Cabbage, cauli, broccoli, kale, collard greens
  • Plant Fava Beans where Tomatoes were, also consider spinach, Silver Beet (Chard)
  • Plant new crop of potatoes
  • Choose and order heirloom deciduous fruit trees from either Koanga or Forgotten Fruits. They will be delivered bare rooted in Winter but need to order now ( I have a nice walnut you can buy)
  • Choose and order/buy evergreen fruit – Blueberries, feijoas, banannas, chilean Gauva’s, Citrus, Avocados. These can be planted now.
  • Blueberry varieties I recommend: Tasty Blue, Velluto Blue, Summer Blue, Powder Blue. These varieties will start fruiting in December and go through to April. They don’t have too much vigorous foliage growth like some varieties which means your pruning will not need to be as vigorous as it might with some varieties.
  • Cover compost with Tarp and separate out the soft greenwaste from the branchy woody waste so you can use the soft greenwaste for hot composting.
  • De-stake trees that don’t need stakes
  • Remove Magnolia
  • Choose and find Cherry varities to graft onto ornamental peaches (the grafting and cutting of scion wood will be done in winter)
  • Remove Lancewood
  • Transplant Lilac 1m to the left Call Tauranga Trees to see if they are interested in the Cercis www.taurangatreeco.co.nz Ph 021486378
